Hal Fischer Gay Semiotics Portfolio and Exhibition Printing
Gallery 16/Urban Digital Color is thrilled to have produced the prints for and helped with the production of Hal Fischer's Gay Semiotics portfolio and exhibitions. Originally produced in 1977, Fischer's seminal body of work is enjoying a second life as a deluxe portfolio, multiple exhibitions, and reprints of the original book.
The portfolio edition contains new prints of the 24 original images, a vintage copy of the Gay Semiotics paperback book, title sheet and colophon, all housed in custom box made by John DeMerritt Bookbinding. It was an interesting challenge to maintain the spirit of the original RC photographic prints while working with current papers and ink sets which provide greater stability and consistency.
In addition to the portfolio, we worked with Hal to recreate a billboard originally installed on Market street near Castro in 1979 along with an edition of the piece. The new billboard was again installed on Market street in conjunction with an exhibition of the Gay Semiotics work at Ratio 3 in San Francisco. The edition of the billboard image was printed by Gallery 16/Urban Digital Color at a more manageable size of 22" x 44" using the same inks and paper as the portfolio prints.
